Back in 2012, we covered the MiiCraft 3D DLP printer created by Taiwanese company Rays Optics, a leading optics manufacturer that creates the projectors and lenses found in many top consumer electronics. The MiiCraft 3D DLP printer ($1,999) is based on Stereolithography (SL) technology. It uses Pico DLP projector and Open Source Arduino Mega 2560 and Python based software as controller and slicer.

After two years of development and testing, the company has just announced the MiiCraft+, the second generation 3D printer with more user-friendly interface and better accuracy. In collabration with Materialise, the Belgian provider of additive manufacturing software solutions and 3D printing services, Rays Optics also announced the launch of MiiCraft Builder. The software package integrates the Materialise Build Processor with an intuitive front-end solution. Once users have a model ready to print, the Build Processor steps in and seamlessly transfers 3D model data to rescale, edit, positioning, slice and automatically generate support structures, giving the operator of 3D printers more control over their 3D print jobs.

Designed for 3D printing prosumers, the MiiCraft+ printers are ideal for creating small, delicate high-quality prints for jewelry design, dentistry, education and fine mechanics.

Compared to its original design, the new MiiCraft+ is "more user-friendly with new interfaces from both the new software and the improved hardware design", says the company.

Users can access and monitor the printing process in both wired or wireless modes. The 'mini-PC' built-in allows MiiCraft+ to work independently without connecting to a PC or notebook. "Users can access printers wirelessly by PCs, notebooks or even mobile phones via a router." says the company.

Additionally, the Z-axis accurancy can be adjusted from 5 micron to 200 micorn. And it is guaranteed to 30 micron if you use MiiCraft own resins. MiiCraft+ integrates printing and curing in one machine. This design allows the device to print out 2cm height in under an hour when the Z-axis is set at 50 microns.

Specs:

  • Build Size: 43mm x 27mm x 180mm
  • XY resolution: 56 microns
  • Speed: 3cm/hour (@ 100microns/z axis
2cm/hour; @ 50microns/z axis
1cm/hour; @ 30microns/z axis)
  • Accessory Teflon film x 6
  • Picker x 2
  • Cleaning kit x 1
  • RJ45 Cable
  • Power adapter+ power cord
  • Resin x 1 (500g/bottle)
  • Printer Dimension: 20.8cm(L) x 20.5cm(W) x 33.5cm(H)
  • Weight: 8.5Kg

Rays Optics has made their printer's technology open source so that users can adapt their design to fit their needs, such as the adjustment of Z axis accuracy or curing time for different materials. Find more technical details here on MiiCraft's site.

The MiiCraft+ is available in January 2015.

You do know MiiCraft came first, right? And it's another one of those times where 3DS just copies another company...like the UP! and the Cube.

That's basically ProJet 1200...
