Known as one of the largest producers and marketers of chemicals and related products in the world, it’s no surprise that BASF has been actively working on next generation products and processes that make use of additive manufacturing technologies.
This week, the chemical company announced that they have signed an agreement with Poietis, the first company in the world for 3D laser-assisted bioprinting, to use their technology for research and development purposes. Among other reasons for the partnership include the combined expertise of both companies in tissue engineering and bioprinting; both companies are looking at ways of applying Poietis’ bioprinting technology to BASF’s existing processes in an effort to improve the company’s skin equivalent model Mimeskin™.
Poietis’ 3D laser-assisted bioprinting technology, which is capable of producing organic tissues layer by layer, allows for precise positioning of the skin cells in three-dimensional structures thanks to the laser assistance. Through this process, cells are able to be cultivated within the Mimeskin™ and ultimately become the closest equivalent to the original physiological tissue of human skin.
“We are extremely pleased about this collaboration. Having long-term expertise in solutions for the dermocosmetics market, BASF understands the benefits of 3D laser-assisted bioprinting compared to conventional cell culture technologies and other bioprinting methods,” said Dr. Fabien Guillemot, Founder and President of Poietis.
“The partnership also emphasizes bioprinted tissue models as an alternative to animal testing in cosmetics and dermopharmacy.”
Guillemot founded Poietis in September of 2014 after spending two years on a project at the Aquitaine Regional Incubator and winning the French National Competition for Creation of Innovative Technology Companies. Sinces its inception, the company has been focused on working with both private companies and public entities to develop and use innovative 3D laser-assisted bioprinting technology to design, develop and manufacture biological tissues.
While the long-term plans of the partnership are yet to be announced, the laser-assisted bioprinting technology provided by Poietis will be used by BASF in their first step towards automating the reproduction of Mimeskin™, followed by more advanced models containing additional cell types.
“Compared to other bioprinting methods the laser-assisted technology provides higher resolution when it comes to the patterning of cells,” adds Dr. Sebastien Cadau, head of tissue engineering development at BASF.
“The partnership with Poietis allows BASF to secure its strategic advantage in better understanding the skin mechanisms which support the development and testing of advanced cosmetic bioactives for skin care applications.”
