When it comes to innovations in 3D printing filaments, 2015 has been one of the best years on record for both entirely new filaments types as well as improvements on existing filaments. Among others, this includes filaments that are embedded with carbon fiber as well as filaments that are made from e-Waste and filaments that are approved for use in space, to name a few.
Now, there’s another unique filament that Makers can add to their collection.
US-based filament manufacturer 3Dom USA announced that they are releasing their new engineering-grade Glass Filled PLA 3D printer filament - a first of its kind.
Designed as a composite PLA/glass material, the Glass Filled PLA filament can be used on any 3D printer that is capable of already printing with PLA filaments. In addition to offering similar benefits that are seen in standard PLA including low warp, low odor and no special extruder or heated bed needed, the unique formula also allows for a higher strength design that is both tough and more flexible.
This isn’t the only unique filament sold by the North Dakota-based company, either; the company also sells the plant-based PLA filament, Biome3D. The company, which was founded in 2014 to be able to serve the 3D printing industry with high-quality, sustainable 3D printing materials, is the result of over a decade of 3D printing experience and over 40 years of plastics expertise.
In keeping true to their original mission of offering sustainable 3D printing materials, the company’s Glass Filled PLA is not only an effort to advance engineered and practical-use 3D printed parts and components, but also to simply offer users a more improved PLA material altogether.
Compared to parts that are printed using standard PLA, the company has made claims that the Glass Filled PLA parts are 1.4 times stronger than PLA at 57 MPa of max tensile strength, are 1.3 times tougher than PLA with 34 J/m of Impact Toughness, are 1.3 times tougher than PLA with 34 J/m of Impact Toughness and finally, are 1.9 times more flexible than PLA with a tensile elongation of 3.4% before failure.
The company has also made the Glass Filled PLA filament to extremely tight tolerances; the two filament diameters of 1.75mm and 2.85mm are each manufactured using an in-line laser scanner to measure and control diameter and ovality tolerances of +/- 0.05mm.
Those interested can purchase a spool of the filament in either size for just $49 by heading over to the 3Dom USA shop.
