Although we’ve come to accept that there are always new technologies and processes being released into the additive manufacturing industry on a seemingly weekly basis, we very rarely ever hear about the difficulties of actually getting these new technologies into the hands of users - many of whom are fine with their preexisting equipment.

Perhaps it makes perfect sense then, that ViscoTec Pumpen- u. Dosiertechnik GmbH, a Bavarian company, has packaged their latest technology in a ‘Starter Kit’ aimed at helping ease users into using their products.

The company, who primarily deals with systems required for conveying, dosing, applying, filling and emptying medium to high-viscosity fluids, works with a variety of industries including the food sector, the automotive industry, the aerospace field, the medical technology and pharmaceuticals.

The company’s new Fluid Dosing & Deposition (FDD) technology - which they are calling a big step forward for the 3D printing sector - allows the industry fast and precise 3D printing of fluids and pastes.

With their FDD starter kit, the company is aiming to make it possible to integrate a volumetric supporting 3D-printhead in a wide range of common filament-type 3D printers.  When combined with the 3D printhead, the kit also includes the corresponding 3D-control unit and other helpful accessories such as dosing needles and cartridges. Additionally, users can use a variety of different printheads depending on the fluid to be used and the part to be printed.

“With the integrated ViscoTec technology, the 3D printer builds up the object layer by layer, by juxtaposing and superposing lines of adhesive beads,” explains the company.

“The core element of each application is a volumetric dispensing pump based on the endless piston principle which belongs to the group of rotary positive displacement pumps. This volumetric dispensing pump is a well-established product from ViscoTec.”

According to the company, their unique technology is suitable for all kinds of fluids ranging from low to high viscosities and is capable of remaining functional even with grainy or fibrous solids.

Among other benefits, the company notes that 3D printed silicones can replace complex injection molded parts, two-component glues based on polyurethane or epoxide can be used for parts with high tensile and compressive strength and allow high chemical and temperature resistances or composite-materials that combine different properties - ultimately, the possibilities are seemingly endless.

"Depending on the application, 3D models and shapes can be produced by varying the printing speed and the thickness of layers," adds the company.

"We guarantee gentle material handling during the additive manufacturing process and can handle extremely high viscosities. The material range is nearly unlimited: silicones, UV-glues, 2-component adhesives, ceramics but also organic cell-suspensions for bio-printing and many more."

Like other products from the company, the company offers comprehensive consulting for every application and, if required, extensive tests will be carried out in close cooperation with the customer.
