Though there are many factors involved in high quality 3D printing, ultimately all 3D prints are only as good as the 3D printer itself allows. And in that respect, good news has just come out of Dallas for those doubtlessly professional users of DLP 3D printing technology. Texas Instruments (or TI) has just announced the release of their next generation DLP chipset DLP9000X, featuring more than 4 million micromirrors, perfect for high quality resin 3D printing at higher speeds than ever before.

Users of DLP 3D printers will doubtlessly be aware that Texas Instruments is one of the leading manufacturers when it comes to DLP chipsets – having sold more than 35 million worldwide. At the core of each of these sets is an array of aluminum micromirrors that are highly reflective and known as the digital micromirror device or DMD. These DMDs are the systems enabling high speed spatial light modulation that, combined with a UV source, are used to solidify resin very accurately and quickly in DLP 3D printers.

And while there was little wrong with the previous DLP chipset by TI, this newest model is more complex and quicker than ever before. Featuring more than 4 million of these micromirrors, the DLP9000X is five times quicker when continuously streaming light, than the current DLP9000 chipset is. This makes it perfect for a number of high quality digital imaging applications, explains Texas Instruments, including 3D printing, direct imaging lithography, laser marking and even more complex tasks such as LCD/OLED repair, computer-to-plate printing and hyperspectral imaging. These DLP chipsets are also being used in movie theatres, conference rooms, and other projection-based venues such as home theatres and even smartphone-based Pico projection, so there is a big market for these chipsets.

As TI explains, the DLP9000X has a number of advantages over its previous model. Key features include the highest pixel streaming speed at over 60 Gbps and 4 million micromirrors that reduce the size of print heads by 50 percent while even supporting remarkable print sizes of less than 1 1 µm.2 It also offers very fast pixel loading speed for real-time patterns random row micromirror loading, perfect for flexible light modulation applications. The DLP9000X has been optimized for wavelengths from 400 to 700 nanometers, perfect for most commonly used resins in DLP 3D printing.

In short, the DLP9000X is perfect for a just about any DLP 3D printer you can think of, especially because it also supports just about every light source currently in use. And to aid developers, Texas Instruments is also maintaining the DLP Design Network that supports hardware and software integration, as well as other areas concerned with practical use. If you or your company are interested in the DLP9000X chipset, it is now available here and includes the DMD, the DLPC910 controller and the DLPC910 PROM.
