Neomek, a North American rapid prototyping and 3D scanning company, has a history of unusual 3D printing Halloween projects. Back in 2013, the independent firm showcased an unbelievably creepy 3D printed Nightmare Before Christmas mask and costume. It still gives us nightmares. Now, the same company have begun a more light-hearted Halloween venture, taking the form of a pumpkin-themed competition and 3D printing opportunity.

The company have used their industrial CT scanning technology to produce a virtual 3D model of a real pumpkin. The software that Neomek used, Wenzel CT scanning and Geomagic, is able to differentiate between different parts of the pumpkin, by identifying their unique densities. Since the seeds of the pumpkin have a higher density than the surrounding pulp, the 3D scanning software is able to isolate the seeds. This isolation allowed the Neomek team to count the exact number of seeds in their pumpkin, without even cutting it open!
The company knows the exact number of seeds in their pumpkin, but for a special Halloween competition, they want you to try and guess that number. US residents aged 18 or over can enter the competition with their answer before November 30th. The winner will be the entrant whose guess is closest to the actual number of pumpkin seeds, and will receive a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced, worth $999, as a prize. In the case of a tie, the winner will be drawn at random. The DJI Phantom 3 Advanced is a super high-tech drone equipped with a state-of-the-art 4K / HD camera. A good way to catch troublesome trick-or-treaters perhaps?

At this point, you might be thinking that a perfectly rendered 3D model of a pumpkin could be put to many good uses. You’d be right. As well as the seed competition, Neomek has made the 3D printable pumpkin files available to download for free on their website, allowing anybody to make an infinite number of 3D printed pumpkins!
