3D printing giant EOS today unveiled the M 100, a new additive manufacturing system for producing metal parts through DMLS (direct metal laser sintering) technology. Though it offers a smaller build volume than their market-leading M 290 metal system, the M 100 is equal in terms of process and parts quality, thus making it a cost-effective solution for those either considering first-time entry to metal 3D printing, or those looking to produce smaller quanitities of metal components.

The M 100’s overall build volume, based on its round platform, is 100 mm diameter. It also includes a powerful 200 watt fibre laser and a smaller laser spot with high  detail resolution that allow the machine to produce high quality, complex, and delicate components with reproducible parts quality. It can, for example, produce approximately 70 dental crowns and bridges in just three hours, said Adrian Keppler, CEO at EOS.

He added that currently, the M 100 system is able to process two types of metal materials: EOS CobaltChrome SP2, a dental prosthesis material, and EOS StainlessSteel 316L for medical, lifestyle and aerospace applications. The next material that will be made available will be EOS Titanium Ti64, a light alloy that will open up the M 100 to motorsports and biomedical applications.

In addition to parts quality, the EOS M 100 was also manufactured to be as efficient as possible, not only in terms of its 3D printing process, but assembly as well. For the process, it features a recoating and exposure strategy that the company says will reduce non-productive periods, while in terms of assembly the M 100 has a modular interior structure allowing for quick set up, dismantling, maintenance and material replacement.

Approximately 70 dental crowns and bridges made of EOS CobaltChrome SP2 in three hours in an M 100 system.

"The EOS M 100 system offers proven DMLS quality and is also the ideal choice for those considering entry into additive manufacturing,” said Keppler. “With its small build volume, which is based on a round platform of 100 mm diameter, the system focuses on the cost-efficient production of small quantities.”

"The EOS M100 adds to our portfolio of metal AM systems and equipment,” added Michael Keane, Manager of Technical Process Development at pilot customer Boston Scientific. “We have found the ease of material handling and component changeover very beneficial. This has the potential to decrease set-up times, increase productivity and improve operator safety and ergonomics.”

The large-format industrial metal 3D printer market can be complex, intimidating, and costly for companies who are relatively new to additive manufacturing, but could benefit from the small batch production of high quality, reproducible, complex parts. EOS’ M 100 now offers a cost effective and easy-to-use solution, potentially opening up more companies to the possibilities of metal 3D printing.

EOS will be presenting its M 100 at this year’s FormNext show, taking place in Frankfurt from November 17-20. In addition to the M 100, it will also be introducing a new monitoring system and a new material. The EOSTATE MeltPool Monistoriy offers automated, real-time monitoring of the DMLS build process for every melting point, every layer and every component, minising risks and reducing the total cost for quality assurance. The new metal metarial to be added to EOS portfolio is known as EOS StainlessSteel CX, a corrosian-resistant stainless steel with stability and hardness that make it ideal for mould and tool manufacture, specifically the manufacturing of injection mould tools that are used ot make medical products.
