Additive manufacturing giant EOS has signed a patent license agreement with metal 3D printing newcomer Additive Industries. Although the parties have agreed to withhold specific details, the deal will license a certain number of EOS patents to Additive Industries, with potential for further licensing open as a possibility.

The agreement is a big coup for Eindhoven, Netherlands-based 3D printing firm Additive Industries, whose colossal MetalFAB1 3D printer (pictured below) we reported on a fortnight ago. That machine promises a tenfold increase in efficiency over market alternatives, and the newly accessible patented technology from EOS should allow the Dutch company to make further developments in its 3D printers and related technology. “For Additive Industries, as newcomer to the industrial additive manufacturing market, this partnership is an important step on our journey to take 3D metal printing from lab to fab. Together we can expand this new production technology from the prototyping domain to the factories of the future”, said Daan Kersten, Additive Industries Co-founder and CEO.

EOS also sounded excited about the partnership, and outlined its plans to continue working with other promising 3D printing firms to keep its fingers in the greatest possible number of 3D printing pies. “We welcome the patent licence agreement with Additive Industries as it confirms the attractiveness of the AM process for industrial use,” enthused Mike Shellabear, EOS Director IP and Technical Support. “In addition to this, the agreement is in line with EOS’ strategy to license our IP to other companies in this industry.”

The patent license agreement with Additive Industries is the latest in a number of recent EOS collaborations. Just a few days ago, the German firm joined forces with Williams Grand Prix Engineering and Williams Advanced Engineering to bring their 3D printing expertise to the world of Formula One racing. Importantly though, these business deals haven’t kept EOS out of their own laboratories. Whilst teaming up with other companies on a regular basis, EOS has kept producing some stunning 3D printers of its own. Their most recent model, the M100, produces metal parts using direct metal laser sintering technology, and features a 100mm diameter build platform. The metal 3D printer, which can be used for a wide range of applications such as dental prostheses and aerospace engineering, was recently unveiled at the formnext 2015 3D printing exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany. Keep following 3Ders for updates on both companies.
