3D Systems today announced the immediate commercial availability of its ProX DMP 320 3D printer. A direct metal 3D printer, the ProX DMP 320 promises high precision, high throughput printing, and has been optimized for chemically-pure titanium, stainless steel and nickel super alloy parts.
2015 was, to say the least, a rocky year for 3D Systems. After suffering significant losses, the additive manufacturing giant responded with employee layoffs and the discontinuation of its underperforming Cube 3D printer. Fortunately, the company’s list of New Year’s resolutions appears to include the production of more high-end direct metal 3D printers. The ProX DMP 320 has been built to accelerate product cycle times and improve the quality and performance of metal parts, promising to set “a new standard for productivity in metal 3D printing”.
The ProX DMP 320 comes equipped with exchangeable manufacturing modules, for rapid material change and replenishment. This feature allows manufacturers to maintain a high tempo production cycle, as well as facilitating efficient powder recycling. The 3D printer also features a number of preset build parameters based on nearly half-a-million test 3D prints. These presets provide guaranteed print quality for a huge range of complex geometries.
The metal 3D printer has been optimized for printing large numbers of relatively large objects. Its 275mm x 275mm x 420mm build volume will support a range of projects, including critical industrial applications such as those in aerospace, automotive and healthcare. The machine can also be configured for either titanium 3D printing or stainless steel and nickel super alloy 3D printing.
With the ProX DMP 320, 3D Systems is promising a high quality machine that will serve to significantly reduce operating costs. A centralized maintenance management system manages print jobs, materials, settings and maintenance for “24/7 productivity”, whilst reduced argon gas consumption and serial manufacturing workflow support also contribute to the efficiency of the metal 3D printer.

Partners of 3D Systems have reported on positive results from the ProX DMP 320. 3rd Dimension, an Indiana based Direct Metal Printing specialist, has been using the machine to produce large numbers of particular metal parts.
“As beta system partners, we have been relying on the ProX DMP 320 to make titanium parts and are impressed by the high throughput, ease of use, consistency of output, and overall part quality,” said Bob Markley, 3rd Dimension Founder and Chief Executive Officer.
The ProX DMP 320 follows the ProX 300, becoming the sixth direct metal 3D printer to be manufactured by 3D Systems.
