In today’s crowded desktop 3D Printer market, steady innovation is all but necessary to stay ahead of the competition. Magicfirm Europe, the Swedish company behind 2014’s ZYYX 3D Printer has just announced the next generation of their flagship machine with the release of the ZYYX+.
With the original ZYYX 3D printer already equipped with features like auto-leveling, an active carbon filter system, filament monitoring, failed print detection and an enclosed build chamber, the primary goal when designing the ZYYX+ was to get a leg up on the competition.
Mats Moosberg, CEO of Magicfirm Europe writes that “the first ZYYX 3D printer was developed with focus on reliability, ease-of-use, making it fume free and quiet since this was lacking in the existing 3D printers. With the new ZYYX+, our objective has been to surpass our competitors when it comes to print quality.”
Print stability and output quality has been addressed with the ZYYX+ 3D printer by making all moveable parts around the print-head out of aluminium. Doing this minimizes printer vibrations to allow for a smoother finish as well as extending the lifetime of the 3D printer.
Another hardware modification to the ZYYX+ 3D printer can be found in the printhead fan. In addition to a power increase, a redesign of the fan-holder now makes it easier for the fan to snap to the side for quick access while performing extruder maintenance. Also, the fan speed can now be adjusted using the fully integrated Simplify 3D software. This addition can help with output quality when 3D printing delicate parts at variable speeds.
Further to the fine-tuning of the machine itself, the company says that motion planner and extrusion algorithms have been reworked to further remove vibrations and improve retractions. As someone that has noticed big improvements in 3D print quality with firmware updates to the machines I'm experienced with, it's good to know Magicfirm is tinkering both in hardware and software.
The company’s online store promotes their own ZYYX proFilaments as being superior to that of the competition. Their proABS, for example is advertised as a “blend that performs well with our build plate and has minimal warp, due to the polymer mix.” Since there’s no heated-bed on the 3D printer itself, minimizing warping while using ABS filament is essential. This being said, I do feel it would be a shame if generic, often less expensive filament brands retained the adhesion problems often associated when printing without a heated bed in ABS plastic.
The ZYYX+ 3D Printer is available to order today at a cost of $2,077.00 USD. Included in the price is the 3D Printer, all the necessary cables and software, 1 Fume filter, a toolbox and maintenance kit.
There’s no question that Magicfirm listened to customer feedback while designing the newest edition to the ZYYX family of 3D printers. The feature-loaded 3D Printer has all manner of convenience and stability built-in and is a welcome addition to an already crowded field of desktop 3D printers.
