MarketsandMarkets, a global market research and consulting company, has recently published a report forecasting the growth of the 3D printing/additive manufacturing gases market over the course of the next five years.

The report, which comprehensively breaks down the market, estimates that the 3D printing gases market will grow USD 26.92 million in 2015 to USD 45.12 million by 2020 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.88%. The report takes into account various types of gases such as Argon and Nitrogen, as well as different kinds of additive manufacturing technologies, from Stereo lithography, to Laser sintering, to PolyJet technologies.

The growth in the additive manufacturing gases market is expected to be driven by needs and developments in the worldwide healthcare industry, as well as the automotive industry and the need for consumer products in developing countries. The fastest growing segment in the 3D printing gases market in the forecast period is expected to be the Design and Manufacturing segment.

In such 3D printing processes, gases such as Argon, Nitrogen, and gas mixtures are used to create the ideal environment in the enclosed printing chambers. As inert gases, they create a highly controlled atmosphere that will not react chemically during the additive manufacturing process. Argon, especially, is estimated to be responsible for the largest market share, while gas mixtures are projected to playing a crucial role in developing the 3D printing gases landscape in the future.

In terms of packaging and distribution for the gases used in additive manufacturing processes, cylinder and packaged gas are expected to be the preferred system. As the report lays out, “As 3D printing/additive manufacturing gases are used in smaller quantities to perform smaller and specialized applications, so cylinder and packaged gas distribution mode is widely preferred by the suppliers. Cylinder & packaged gas distribution mode offers cost-effective and safer mode to supply smaller volume of 3D printing/additive manufacturing gases.” While the latter is expected to be the dominant mode of distribution, merchant liquid distribution and tonnage distribution are projected to grow during the forecast period until 2020.

The report also determines that Laser sintering, or SLS, the additive manufacturing process of using a laser to melt powdered metal material into a form, will “gain maximum traction during the forecast period,” and will be the fastest growing of the 3D printing technologies. Stereolithography, or SLA, and PolyJet technologies are also expected to promote growth in the 3D printing gases market.

For the benefit of the report, the 3D printing/additive manufacturing gases market has been divided into region-based segments consisting of North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and RoW or the Rest of the World. Some of the market leaders include Germany’s BASF SE and The Linde Group, France’s Air Liquide S.A., though the North American market is projected to make the biggest market share gain in the forecast period with its market leaders such as Praxair Inc., Air Products and Chemicals Inc., Airgas Incorporated, and Advanced Specialty Gases Inc.

The report was compiled based on a number of primary interviews conducted with industry experts such as CEOs, directors and executives, as well as consultants and academic professionals. From the interviews data was ascertained and compared with secondary source estimates. With reports being released detailing projected and past growths of the 3D printing industry, it seems clear that the technology is on the rise and will continue to develop productively over the next five years and on into the future.
