A UK-based online shop is offering perhaps one of the most bizarre 3D printed personalized products we’ve ever seen: nearly naked 3D printed figurines adorned with your own face and customized to match your body type and skin tone. Whether you see them as a celebration of the human body in all its shapes and sizes, or narcissism taken to its logical conclusion, 3D printed nude selfies have officially arrived, and as a society, there’s no going back from here.
In order to get your hands on, all you have to do is send two selfies in to the Nudee service, offered by the quirky UK retailer Firebox: the first selfie is straight-on image of your face, while the other must be taken from the side. You then select from one of three body types: slim, curvy, or muscular. Nudee’s “eagle-eyed sculptors” then use 3D modeling and 3D printing technology to capture “every curve, muscle, and/or rib,” resulting in a 20cm tall (7.8 inch) nude figurine. Note that Nudee did choose to retain some degree of modesty: both the male and female figures are wearing a pair of black underwear, so their most private bits are concealed (there is currently no option for women to select a bra.)
Since Nudee is using a set of three very limited body templates, the figurines are not going to be 100% accurate, which some users may find disappointing—after all, if you’re going to get this personal, you might as well go all the way. There are also some other limitations: models cannot be wearing glasses, and long hair may be “cut short.” Consumers may also be weary of the potential for misuse—what happens if someone gets their hands on an unsuspecting friend’s (or frenemy’s) selfies, for example?
Another factor to take into consideration is the price. A single 20cm-tall figurine, made from non-water resistant 3D printing material, will run you £149.99 (US$220), with 3-4 weeks estimated delivery time, and, unsurprisingly, no return policy whatsoever. Delivery is also currently limited to the UK.
Nevertheless, as a novel use of 3D printing technology, Nudee has certainly been getting quite a bit of media attention, and has opened a veritable Pandora’s box of 3D printing possibilities. After all, we've seen 3D selfie scanning photobooths, 3D printed school photo selfies, and even 3D printed selfies used as Lego heads, all of which were (thankfully) fully-clothed. Whether used as a gift, a celebration of body confidence, visual motivation to hit the gym more often, or “the ultimate narcissist’s desk accessory,” what you choose to do with your 3D printed nude-self is entirely up to you. We’re not here to pass judgement…but we’re not asking for details either.
