Optomec, a leading supplier of 3D printed metals and 3D printed electronics systems, has received numerous orders for its unique Aerosol Jet 5X 3D printing system, which will be used by global leaders in the consumer electronics, industrial, healthcare, aerospace and defense industries to manufacture 3D printed electronics for smart devices and IoT applications.

The Aerosol Jet 5X 3D printing system was specifically developed to reduce the overall size of electronic systems and to enable a new generation of lighter weight, cost-effective, high performance smart devices for consumer and industrial Internet of Things applications. Indeed, today’s IoT-connected objects can range of refrigerators to military drones to dog tags—but what they have in common is a need for tightly integrated 3D antennas, sensors, and other circuitry, which the Aerosol Jet 5X system was optimized to provide.

Optomec’s 3D printed electronics system comes with 5 axes of coordinated print motion as well as patented material input and aerodynamic deposition capabilities. Rather than the traditional inkjet process, the patented Aerosol Jet 5X print head works by precisely depositing nanomaterials and can thus print feature sizes ranging from 10 microns up to millimetres in width. The advanced system supports a range of functional materials, including conductive inks, dielectrics, polymers and adhesives, which can be integrated directly onto a variety of plastic, ceramic, and metal 3D structures.

According to the company, this precision and flexibility make it ideal for producing high-resolution 3D printed electronics such as resistors, capacitors, antennas for smartphones and tablets, sensors, batteries, thin film transistors, fuel cells, and more. Aerosol Jet 5X technology is also scalable, and can be used in high-volume industrial applications.

GE Healthcare Systems is one of the companies to have ordered Optomec’s 3D printed electronic system. A unit of General Electric Company, GE Healthcare specializes in providing advanced medical solutions centered on the latest technologies. “With the Aerosol Jet 5X system we expect to iterate quickly to provide optimized 3D printed electronic solutions enabling engineers to create smaller, lighter, and more efficient products,” said Steve Crynock, AME Senior Electrical Process and Engineer at GE Healthcare Systems.

“We are pleased to see the rapid adoption of our recently introduced Aerosol Jet 5X system by multiple companies across a variety of industries,” said Mike O’Reilly, Director Aerosol Jet Product Management at Optomec. “This solution is enabling next generation 3D electronics in ways not possible with current manufacturing methods.”

It is no surprise that Optomec's Aerosol Jet 5X technology is in such high demand. Smart devices and IoT applications becoming ubiquitous across nearly every modern industry, from automotive to aerospace to consumer electronics, healthcare, defense and power generation, and the demand for integrated electronics systems is only expected to increase. 3D printed electronics systems answer the call by allowing precisely designed antennas, sensors, and other circuitry to be integrated directly during the manufacturing process.

The news of Optomec’s multiple orders comes after a string of successful announcements from the company. In 2015, Optomec received strategic investments from GE and Autodesk to support the development of 3D printed electronics. The company also reported a 70% revenue growth for its industrial 3D printing systems during the same year.
