Leapfrog, a Netherlands-based 3D printer manufacturer, has launched its XceL 3D printer, a large-format machine with a build area of up to 530 x 500 x 2300mm. The XceL features a closed environment and dual extrusion system, and can be controlled via smartphone.

These are busy times for Leapfrog, a Dutch 3D printer manufacturer with a reputation for hopping over its competitors. Last week, the startup shared a sneak preview of its forthcoming dual-headed Bolt 3D printer, to be released in June, and has now announced the immediate availability of the Bolt’s (very) big brother, the Leapfrog XceL. This monstrous amphibian can produce incredibly tall prints, but also packs some useful technical features, such as a fully closed environment and dual extrusion system.

For users of the XceL 3D printer, there’s no need to worrying about holding the door, since the large-format printer has a fully closed environment. Because of this, the printer is able to ensure a constant temperature throughout the build space, resulting in higher quality prints with minimal warping. The sliding door of the printer can be opened once the print is complete, giving easy access to the printed object—you might need a second pair of hands if you’ve printed something over two meters tall, however.

In addition to the high-quality components of the XceL, Leapfrog has also developed new software to improve printing workflow. The 3D printer can be controlled remotely via WiFi, through a computer, tablet, or smartphone, giving hassle-free control over the machine. According to the company, the simplicity of its software makes it easy to see how much material the printer has left and how much time is left on a single print job, while pause and resume functions can be activated remotely.

The Leapfrog team has used the XceL to successfully print massive items such as a 3D printed lampshade and 3D printed chair. But with large prints, there is always a greater risk involved: a lot of filament could be wasted if a 530 x 500 x 2,300mm print goes wrong. Because of this, Leapfrog has put some effort into safeguarding against potential printing problems with its patented PerfectLevel automatic calibration system, designed to automatically calibrate the print bed before use. There is also an automated filament loading system and filament detection, so the printer knows when to ask for a top-up.
