It must be very busy time for HP. Just last week, they created a lot of buzz in the 3D printing world by shifting their focus to the 3D printing industry with their HP Jet Fusion 3D Printer. Up to ten times faster than competing machines and capable of cutting down production costs by up to 50 percent, the Jet Fusion 3D Printer could have the power to change industrial 3D printing as we know it. To provide users with a diverse range of material options, HP has now announced a material development partnership with French chemical speciailst Arkema.
This new partnership is specifically based on the launch of the new HP Open Platform, through which suppliers can qualify new 3D printable material options. Through that platform, Arkema, they will drive innovation and provide numerous options for end-use 3D printed parts.
Thanks to the Open Platform, Arkema says, they will be able to adapt their material portfolio for 3D printing. For HP, the company will work to make a wide variety of materials – including Rilsan fine powders, Rilsamid polyamides, Kynar resins and Pebax copolymers – available, with more following in the future. Clients will especially be interested in access to the company’s engineering resins. Their materials will allow clients to, Arkema says, transform supply chains from ‘just-in-time’ delivery to ‘here-and-now’ production.
The decision to set up a collaboration with Arkema was an easy one, as the chemical specialist has previously developed numerous 3D printing material through its "lightweight materials and design" R&D platform. The company also works with partners in a variety of markets, including the automotive, aerospace, sports, and healthcare sectors, which are already dabbling with 3D printing. “A key piece of HP’s strategy in 3D Printing is breaking down the barriers that have inhibited the market, including expanding the materials options that are available,” said Stephen Nigro, president of HP's 3D printing business. “Arkema's customer focus and proven ability to innovate makes them a great fit for the Open Platform and we are excited to see what they bring to market.”
Arkema, in turn, was very impressed by HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D Printer and open material platform, and believes it could grow into a disruptive force in the manufacturing industry. “Arkema believes that the future of 3D Printing for production parts will be driven by the development of application specific materials,” said Adrien Lapeyre, Arkema's Global Market Manager for Technical Polymer Powders. “The HP Multi Jet Fusion Open Platform is a great concept that should accelerate the adoption of 3D Printing, which is why Arkema is happy to collaborate with HP to design new materials and uncover new applications to help our customers realize the full potential of 3D Printing.”
