As someone who is addicted to almost everything HBO, I have not been able to contain my excitement for the network’s newest upcoming television release: Westworld. The show, a science-fiction series based off of the 1973 film of the same name written and directed by Michael Crichton (whom you may know as the author of Jurassic Park!), tells the story of a futuristic theme park run by AI robots where humans are meant to indulge in every fantasy, no matter what it is.
Apparently I am not the only one who is massively excited for the show’s release, as UK television network Sky Atlantic recently announced the show’s anticipated release date within the UK in the coolest way ever using 3D printing.
Specifically, the UK network released a short teaser video in which a sort of futuristic Vitruvian Man emerges from a stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer to reveal the show’s release date, October 4th, 2016. The 3D model, as it turns out, is a nod to Westworld’s own “host” manufacturing line, through which the park’s artificially intelligent beings are constructed by the theme park’s founder, Dr. Robert Ford—played by the amazing Anthony Hopkins.
The promo clip itself was made by Sky Atlantic in partnership with Hobs Studio, a UK-based 3D printing service, which provided the network with access to the UK’s largest stereolithography 3D printer. The clip shows the 3D printed model emerging from the 3D printer, which uses lasers to turn liquid resin into a solid shape. The effect, as you can see for yourself, is quite eery but very effective.
The show itself, which was created by Jonathan Nolan, writer of Interstellar and The Dark Knight, and Lisa Joy from Burn Notice and Pushing Daisies, explores a dystopian and twisted take on relationship between humans and technology. Which, as you can imagine, is right up our alley for entertainment!
So, while the show only airs in a couple of weeks, at least we have some fun teasers and promos to feast our eyes on in the meantime. Check out the official trailer for the new and highly anticipated series below:
