3D printer manufacturer Type A Machines has teamed with 3D printing technology company Mosaic Manufacturing to integrate the Mosaic Palette, a multi-filament 3D printing accessory, with the Type A Machines Series 1 3D printer. The expected retail price for the Palette is $999.

Type A Machines, the California-based company behind the Series 1 FDM 3D printer, is planning “to bring multi-filament FFF printing to the U.S. market” via the Mosaic Palette, a popular multi-filament 3D printer accessory developed by Mosaic Manufacturing, a specialist in multicolor 3D printing based in Ontario, Canada. The Mosaic Palette will now be available as an integrated bundle with the Type A Series 1 3D printer via the Type A Machines online store.
Powered by Mosaic Manufacturing’s proprietary Series Enabled Extrusion of Materials (SEEM) technology, the Mosaic Palette will enable owners of the Type A Machines Series 1 3D printer to print single objects with up to four filaments (and colors) without compromising on performance or losing space from the printer's build volume of one cubic foot. The Palette accessory features the 3D printing industry's first closed-loop feedback system to ensure each print stays in sync, layer after layer, providing clean four-color printing without the high learning curve associated with other solutions.
While multi-material, multicolor 3D printing is possible on other machines, most systems promising such capabilities use multiple extruders (one for each filament used) or require stopping and starting as the filament is switched. The Mosaic Palette works differently, assembling a single strand of filament by using multi-extruder information to determine the length and order of each filament segment. A cutter and splicer then assemble each segment to create a single strand for extrusion. In this way, users can combine materials with different finishes and colors to create entirely different kinds of 3D printed object.
“Many have attempted to solve the challenge of printing with multiple filaments, Type A Machines included,” said Andrew Rutter, Type A Machines founder and CEO. “Mosaic has created the first real solution that solves the immediate need for high-quality multi-color printing, while opening the door to new multi-filament applications with the Series 1. We are excited to be the only printer manufacturer offering this significant advance in multi-filament printing.”
In 2015, Mosaic Manufacturing ran a Kickstarter campaign for the Palette multi-filament accessory, raising over $230,000 CAD from more than 400 backers. After the successful campaign, Mosaic moved from Montreal to Toronto, and has continued to supply its multi-filament solution to makers. The collaboration with Type A Machines is the startup’s first partnership with a major 3D printer manufacturer, and could spark an increase in interest in the multi-filament accessory.

Series 1 users can reserve a Palette for the Series 1 3D printer via the Type A Machines online store. Retail price is expected to be $999, and shipping is set to begin in early January 2017.
The Series 1 Pro, Type A Machines’ most advanced 3D printer, offers a cubic foot of build volume, a heated build platform, and a G2 extruder. The machine is available for $4,095.
