Desktop 3D printer manufacturer XYZprinting has teamed up with bookstore Barnes & Noble for the second annual Barnes & Noble Mini Maker Faire, taking place November 5-6. XYZprinting will demonstrate its da Vinci Jr. 1.0w 3D printer at the nationwide in-store event.
Barnes & Noble might specialize in the printed word, but the bookselling giant will this month showcase a different kind of printing—3D printing!—to help teach youngsters (and curious adults) about the new technology. On the weekend of November 5-6, the bookstore will host its second annual Mini Maker Faire at stores across the country, inviting attendees to try out 3D printing for themselves by sketching a design and seeing it come to life in the form of a 3D printed model. 3D printers will be provided by desktop 3D printing specialist XYZprinting, creators of the popular da Vinci line of printers.
“The biggest barrier for most people interested in 3D printing is their fear that it requires a lot of knowledge about technology, engineering and design,” said Simon Shen, CEO of XYZprinting. “We are excited to work with Barnes & Noble to offer hands-on experiences that demystify 3D printing and show adults and kids alike how easy it is to design and create projects. Our entire line of da Vinci 3D printers was developed to offer people an easy-to-use, affordable and compact way to make their own creations.”
The da Vinci Jr. 1.0w, a 3D printer aimed squarely at beginners, features a 5.9” x 5.9” x 5.9” build volume and uses only a bio-degradable, non-toxic PLA filament. XYZprinting believes that this eco-friendly feature of the 3D printer will make it appealing to kids as well as adults, and will attempt to entice potential customers at the Mini Maker Faire with a bundled package that includes software, access to a gallery of projects (toys, education, office, home) to inspire creativity, and pre-arranged lesson plans which focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) subjects.
With some bookstores struggling to stay afloat in an increasingly tech-obsessed world, Barnes & Noble is doing everything it can to embrace new technology like 3D printing in order to keep its place on the high street. “Barnes & Noble's ongoing partnership with XYZprinting is an important part of our mission to advance tech literacy and break down the intimidation barrier to new technology," said Kathleen Campisano, Vice President of Toys & Games at Barnes & Noble. XYZprinting will be flying the 3D printing flag at the Barnes & Noble Mini Maker Faire, but the event will also offer a diverse range of series of workshops and discussions from other innovators and brands looking to share the latest trends in designing, building, creating, and making.
