3D printing company Formlabs is kicking off this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with several original product launches. Born out of MIT in 2011, Formlabs is best known for making powerful 3D printing systems for engineers, designers, and artists. But with the launch of their experimental product platform Form X, as well as the new Ceramic and Grey Resins, the 3D printer company is expanding into some exciting new territory.
Form X is Formlabs’ new experimental product platform showcasing innovative new tools, materials, and approaches to additive manufacturing. The platform is aimed at advanced users who want to explore the boundaries of what’s possible with desktop stereolithography (SLA).
“In announcing Form X, we want to get innovative materials and research tools into the hands of those who wish to explore, improvise, and push the boundaries of what’s possible with 3D printing and on the Form 2,” says David Lakatos, Chief Product Officer at Formlabs.
While several Form X projects are currently in development, Formlabs has launched OpenFL (an API for hacking the Form 1+), as well as the stunning new Ceramic Resin just in time for CES 2017.
Ceramic Resin
Weighing in as the first experimental material from Form X, Ceramic Resin produces post-cured prints with a distinct aesthetic that looks and feels remarkably like ceramic. After firing, 3D prints become pure ceramic parts suitable for glazing.
“Ceramic Resin is one of the most novel areas in material science to explore in 3D printing right now,” Lakatos says. “Ceramic 3D printing allows for the creation of structures and complex geometries not possible with traditional ceramic fabrication techniques.”

In addition to the Ceramic Resin, Formlabs has unveiled its new, reformulated Grey Resin.
“Our general purpose resins have always been a great focus of our development efforts,” explains Lakatos. “We worked together with our customers to arrive at the third reformulation of Grey, which brings greater opacity and matte finish to one of our most beloved materials.”

An improvement on its previous versions, the new Grey Resin is specially designed for inspecting even the finest details of your prints. The versatile matte finish works for both immediate presentation or as a base for painting.
