Consumer electronics brand Polaroid has announced it is expanding its line of 3D printing products in the United States and Canada with the release of the Polaroid Design 3D Pen. Marketed as the company’s “most advanced 3D pen,” the new product is geared towards professional designers, artists, and engineers. It is currently available for pre-order through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.

Just over a year ago, Polaroid—known best for its instant cameras—broke into the world of 3D printing with the fashionable ModelSmart 250S 3D printer. Since then, it has proceeded to release a whole line of affordable desktop 3D printers and 3D pens. It’s newest product has got us pretty excited as well, as it seems it could be a reliable (and affordable) 3D pen option for the professional market.

Let’s take a look at the product: first off, the Polaroid Design 3D pen boasts a sleek and elegant structure that is designed for comfort as well as extended use. In terms of features, the 3D pen integrates an internal cooling fan which helps to prevent jamming; an auto-eject safety feature that puts the 3D pen on standby after four minutes and ejects the filament before going into sleep mode; six preset speed options; temperature control; and a high-resolution OLED LCD display screen that allows users to monitor their 3D pen settings with ease.

In terms of material, the Polaroid Design 3D pen is reportedly compatible with most standard filaments, as well as PLA filaments in neon, wood, and metal. As the temperature of the pen’s extrusion tip can be controlled, a wide range of materials can be used. Polaroid’s 3D pen also comes in a variety of professional colors and finishes, including matte black, erbium, grey, slate grey, and Tuscan sun gold.

The 3D pen, which is offered by Coretech Printer Group Co. Ltd., is currently available for pre-order through Indiegogo, and backers can still benefit from some early bird deals, including the “Be the First” bundle which includes a Polaroid Design 3D pen, a Polaroid gift box, a one-year subscription to Polaroid’s 3D Gallery, and 20 download credits for a pledge of $130. The 3D pen, which is expected to ship to backers in July 2017, will reportedly retail for $179.

According to President and CEO of Polaroid Scott W. Hardy, the company was inspired to develop the Polaroid Design 3D pen after seeing the success and enthusiasm surrounding its previous product, the Polaroid Draw.

He said: “We were excited by the reactions we received at CES for the Polaroid Draw 3D pen….Because of the positive reception the Polaroid Draw 3D pen received, we decided to take a look at other segments of the market that were in need of quality 3D products at the right price point. We then recognized a need for an advanced 3D pen model geared toward design and engineering professionals. Whether they’re looking to create artwork, prototypes, jewelry or models, the Polaroid Design 3D pen will help these professionals bring their concepts to life.”

If you’re interested in getting your hands on Polaroid’s professional 3D pen, the Indiegogo campaign is running for another month.
