The latest trend for desktop 3D printers, conveyor belt build platforms, seems to really be taking off. The Blackbelt 3D printer, developed by a Dutch startup of the same name, has raised over €100,000 through a successful Kickstarter campaign, and now California-based 3D printer company Printrbot has introduced its latest offering, the Printrbelt 3D printer.

The Printrbelt 3D printer, which is already available to order through the Printrbot website, is a desktop additive manufacturing system which integrates a moving platform. This distinct feature, along with a novel angled printhead, makes for a 3D printer that can print continuously, as printed parts are automatically moved along the Z-axis on the print belt until they come off at the end.

Printrbot’s new 3D printer is listed on its website for the reduced price of $1,699.15 (normally $1,999), making it not only a uniquely built 3D printer, but also a surprisingly affordable one. While the 3D printer is available for order, however, customers may have to wait for some time before they receive their machines.

As the Printrbelt page says, “We will make these one at a time and start shipping each one in order, beginning in 2 weeks. In the next few weeks, we will ramp up production until the lead time drops to next day. There is no way to predict when you will get yours, since it is determined by the initial sales.”

The 3D printer was developed in partnership with Polar3D, which developed the cloud software for processing prints. Access to this cloud service will be included in the 3D printer purchase. (Printrbot has explicitly not guaranteed compatibility with other third-party software or operating systems.)

Time to look at the specs. The new Prinrbelt 3D printer offers a build area of 152 x 152 mm with “Infinite Z” printing, a layer height resolution of 0.2 mm, and print speeds of 30 to 60 mm/s (depending on the material used). The printer is compatible with 1.75 mm PLA filament, and is equipped with a Gear Head v2 Alu Extruder. Other hardware features include a Ubis 13HF hot end, a stainless steel, Kapton-covered belt, and 20-tooth, dual-flange GT2 aluminum belt drive pulleys. The 3D printer is powered by a Printrboard Rev F6 and Raspberry Pi 3.

The 3D printer is also remarkably compact, weighing only 19 lbs and having dimensions of 400 x 600 x 400 mm. While this may be limiting in terms of what size objects you can 3D print (in the X-Y dimensions), the Printrbelt 3D printer will fit easily into your workspace, whether at home or in the office.

Diego, the existance of that voxeljet printer is one of the reasons why Blackbelt couldn't get a blanket patent on the tilted conveyor method. I for one am excited to see where this form factor leads.

Very smart. Great job on the design.
