3D Hubs, a collaborative production platform for 3D printer owners and 3D makers, released today the November edition of their Industry Trend Report on 3D printing. Currently more than 1,500 printers are registered on 3D Hubs, and among them,
"Stratasys is the market leader with 25.5% of the install base on 3D Hubs, due to the acquisition of Makerbot. However, RepRap and Ultimaker are not lagging far behind with respectively 21.9% and 18.4% of the the install base. Finally, 10.8% of the registered printers on 3D Hubs are made up by a range of 3D systems machines."
"Our biggest insight is the fact that the Open Source based RepRaps and Ultimakers are both bravely holding significant market share in a market that is targeted by 3D printing giants Stratasys (5.1B USD market cap) and 3D systems (6.5B USD market cap)." writes 3D Hubs. "FDM printers are still making up the majority of our install base. However, EOS, Zcorp and FormLabs printers are becoming more prominent due to the increased interest of professional service providers."

Part of the dispartity is due to different promotion activity, i think. I found a flyer of 3Dhubs in my ultimaker package. I assume that everybody gets this so it would be logical that more Ultimaker users would be signing up for this service. does anyone know if new makerbot users get flyers as well?

Photizo Group has conducted a primary market research study on the personal 3D printing market and found nearly similar results, minus the popularity of the Ultimaker. In our study (which was global, so adjust expectations accordingly) RepRap and home-built kit printers were most common. The most popular 'branded' personal 3D printer was MakerBot by a sizeable degree, with 3D systems behind by a significant margin, along with a few smaller brands like Ultimaker and Afinia. But we also found the general attitude towards personal 3D printing is very different in Europe than it is in North America, and it is entirely probable that among European users certain native brands such as Ultimaker carry more appeal. 3Dhubs says it has 246 Ultimakers and 275 Makerbots worldwide. I know that makexyz has 128 Ultimakers and 606 Makerbots worldwide. Even if 3Dhubs is Europe based and makexyz USA based, I don't believe that the Ultimaker is above Makerbot in Europe.
