We just mentioned 3D System's new continuous-tone, full-color ProJet 4500 3D printer, but today the company has also released another 3D printer called the ProJet 5500X. The ProJet 5500X is not a full-color printer but a multi-material 3D printer based on its latest MultiJet Printing (MJP) technology.
MultiJet 3D Printers (MJP) print thin layers of UV-curable liquid plastic onto a flat platform, using wax to create supports that brace the part during production. UV lamps cure each layer, and the build platform lowers for the next layer. This process continues layer by layer until the part is complete.
The device simultaneously prints and fuses together flexible and rigid material composites, in a variety of colors and shades including opaque, clear, black or white and numerous shades of gray. 3D Systems says that the ProJet 5500X is able to deliver the toughest multi-material composites.
The ProJet 5500X features fast print speeds, a large build volume, and convenient print-to-part process. With its industrial-grade print head, the ProJet 5500X prints up to two times faster than any other printer in its class, and produces more than 60% larger volume than all other comparable systems. The printer is capable of printing parts up to half a meter long, or more parts per print job, says the company.
Using the new VisiJet Composite materials, the ProJet 5500X offers hundreds of material variations in a single print to match your specifications.
