Feb.4, 2014

Apparently, RadioShack still exists. Last Sunday, RadioShack - once a go-to destination for household electronics - used a couple of the best Super Bowl ads of 2014 to usher in the company's new brand positioning. RadioShack's stock is down over 85% in the last four years, but that was aided by series of commercials featuring Jason Voorhees, 3D printing, and a wide range of 1980's iconic figures.

The Friday The 13th film franchise and Jason Voorhees are a major part of 80's pop culture in. Friday the 13th is considered one of the most successful media franchises in America, and it has generated a fanbase who have created their own Friday the 13th films, fashioned replica Jason Voorhees costumes, and tattoos of Friday the 13th artwork.

The first 30-second ad, titled "The Phone Call," features icons from '80s pop culture who show up to reclaim the technology of their decade, helping the brand turn the page on the RadioShack of the past. The spot opens in a throwback RadioShack store; an associate receives a warning phone call before familiar '80s personalities including Hulk Hogan, Mary Lou Retton, Kid 'n' Play, and Alf, among others, barge in to "take back" their technology. What's left is a sleek, modern store that serves as an introduction and invitation for consumers to shop the new RadioShack.

"This is a bold, strategic move for RadioShack, and we're using the Super Bowl as the platform to get people to rethink RadioShack," said Jennifer Warren, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at RadioShack. "This ad is meant to grab attention, make viewers laugh, and let people know, it's out with the old and in with the new RadioShack."

Then comes the second commercial which features Jason Voorhees who comes to RadioShack's new store with a sword. Wearing his famous hockey mask, this time Jason has a keen interest in what a 3D printer is creating. In the spot, a RadioShack employee tries to show Jason how to use a Afinia 3D printer and various things that 3D printing can be used for. Jason, who hasn't changed much since the 1980's, is more interested in how to reach his victims. He prints out a key to the employee's house.

RadioShack stock surged over 7% in early trading on Monday. In the commercial, Chanhassen-based Afinia's 3D printer shows up RadioShack's new store. This is a very good marketing for Afinia, even it was shown only about some seconds. Currently RadioShack is selling the company's 3-D printers in its retail stores.
