Finnish smartphone manufacturer Jolla has released 3D files and technical specs of two replacement back covers for the Jolla smartphone so you can personalise your Jolla to match your mood and personality.
Jolla puts a nice step towards customization of your smartphone. The Jolla smartphone, running Sailfish OS Beta, is available for 399 euros including VAT. Earlier this year Jolla had two highly successful pre-order campaigns that both sold-out.
Jolla's 'The Other Half' system allows users to re-create their Jolla over-and-again. With more than a fresh coat of paint, each colour option packs a unique ambience with custom tones, wallpapers and more. Your Jolla detects which cover is being used and instantly adapts the look and feel of your phone with the patented wireless NFC technology.
Released this week, The Other Half 'Keira Black' smart cover is electric, urban and industrial, and The Other Half 'Aloe' smart cover is calm and relaxing. Both retail at 29 euros. You only need to switch the cover and the handset takes care of the rest.
Jolla is not the only mobile maker to take an interest in 3D printing and custom hardware, Nokia released 3D files for the Lumia 820 last year to allow consumers to make their own covers. But Jolla has done more than that.
Jolla has released the Other Half developers kit, which includes the 3D modelling files required to 3D print your own covers, details about the mechanical and electrical interfaces, cover identification interfaces, NFC chips, software architecture, security, DIY powers etc.
Jolla has also made the smartphone 'Android compatible' so users can have highly popular apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Spotify run directly on Sailfish OS.
Jolla wants to offer a new kind of interface for a device that encourages more developers and third parties get involved in developing new types of smartphone. By releasing 3D printable files for 3D printing, Jolla hopes to make the device more attractive and to spark others to get involved in co-creation.
