3D printed meat may be coming to Brooklyn, New York. The tissue engineering lab Modern Meadow is in negotiations to lease up to 10,000 square feet at the BioBAT facility in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. The company aims to produce lab-grown leather within two years and 3D printed meat in the more distant future.
Right now, Modern Meadow's lab is located at the University of Missouri, but with new investments and plans to roll out new products, the company wanted to be closer to the vibrant fashion and restaurant scenes of New York. There, the company will be able to get the word out about new products like their 3D printed leather and meat. They also want to embrace the urban environment by opening their doors to visitors as a sort of "leather and meat brewery" where visitors could learn about 3D bioprinting.
Andras Forgacs is the co-founder of Modern Meadow and was a previous co-founder of Organovo, a leader in tissue engineering. Forgacs sees Brooklyn as an ideal location with access to the creative food environment and biomedical institutions of New York as well as the flavor and fragrance companies of New Jersey.
"New York is the center of the fashion industry in the U.S., and one of the most exciting and creative food environments," Andras Forgacs, Chief Executive of Modern Meadow said to Crain's NY. "We look forward to working with talent on both fronts."
But the deal is not sealed. Before Modern Meadow will move to New York, tax breaks and a BioBAT lease are needed to make the move economically feasible. The company hopes to qualify for the new Start-Up NY tax relief program that encourages companies to relocate.
Life science may be a growing sector in New York as investments for the city the have gone up by 27% to $327 million according to The MoneyTree Report from PwC and the National Venture Capital Association. Mr. Forgacs sees the Bay Area as a mature ecosystem for life science, but New York as a place with exciting potential.
