3D printer company Printrbot will show off its first metal-framed 3D printer from Feb. 12 to 15 at the 2014 3D Print Show in New York.

Printrbot is famous for its low-cost, open-source, wood-framed machines but now an evolution has happened - Printrbot has come up with a new, good looking metal framed Printrbot "Simple."

The new machine has an aluminum and steel frame, and it is larger than the existing laser-cut plywood Simple. The print bed is capable of supporting prints up to 6" x 6" x 6" (152 x 152 x 152 mm), while the wooden Simple, in contrast, does 4" x 4" x 4" (102 x 102 x 102 mm) prints. The increased print size is due in part of new Z-axis rods which has grown from 8mm to 12mm.

The metal frame helps absorb sound, according to makezine. In the initial tests the new metal framed Simple made much less noise than the original wooden Simple.

The new Simple will also be equipped with a Z-axis end-stop adjustment knob and a self-leveling bed. It doesn't look like having a heated bed so it can't print ABS.

The metal Simple can be purchased in this Spring, the price is not decided yet, but Brook Drumm, Printrbot CEO says in the video below that the price will be between the wooden Simple's $399 and the Printrbot Junior's $699.

The original printrbot was made by using printed parts. I agree that the laser cut one is somehow anoying to assemble, and some parts are really flimsy. I prefer much more the Qu-Bd One design with laser cut MDF which is very simple as a design.

It's about time. A thin plywood machine structure is fine for prototyping, but it's very lazy and flimsy for volume production.

This is great news. Printrbot was the first project that I started and I think it is great as a pinter. Looking forward for this metal Printrbot.
