Does your hackerspace want a 3D Printer? Here is a chance to win a LulzBot TAZ. LulzBot announced today it is giving away eight free TAZ 3D printers to hackerspaces to celebrate Hardware Freedom Day on Saturday March 15, 2014.

Any community-operated physical hackerspace, where people meet and work on their projects, can submit the forthcoming My Hackerspace Wants a 3D Printer form during March 1-14, 2014. LulzBot staff will review all entries, and choose the eight hackerspaces with the most creative idea on how they will use their new LulzBot 3D printer.

The TAZ 3, the fifth model in the LulzBot line of 3D printers by Aleph Objects, Inc. has a few hardware and software improvements, including a controller with a graphical LCD interface that allows users to print from an SD card and to perform printer start up, selection, and configuration changes. It retails for $2,195.

The TAZ 3 was awarded Respects Your Freedom (RYF) certification by The Free Software Foundation (FSF) in February, 2014, meaning the product runs entirely on free and open source software and that LulzBot distributes the source code so customers can control and expand every aspect of their printer.

"We believe that being free and open is good for innovation, and it's good business," said Jeff Moe, President of Aleph Objects, Inc. The company makes the software free and publicly available on their website. The codes are also under a copyright license that grants end users the legal right to modify the code to meet individual needs. That license also goes a step further to ensure that any spin-offs or resulting work is also made available to other users.

Interested hackerspace communities can review entry details here.

"Hackerspaces are passionately driving user innovation and creativity, especially within the 3D printing industry." said Moe, "Our goal is to get as many TAZ 3 printers into as many hackerspaces as possible."
