Afinia has launched its next-generation 3D Printer H480, an affordable device that includes a number of features, including what Afinia called "automatic bed levelling and nozzle height detection".
The Afinia H480 is the successor to the H479, but with a number of small changes. It features over 5" cubed printing envelope (same as H479) and heated build platform. "The output is accurate to within .15mm (6 thousandths of an inch), and has 30% of the strength of injection molded parts." explains Afinia.
Unfortunately the Afinia's new levelling system is not a real "auto leveling". The user needs to attach the Platform Calibration Probe magnetically to the extruder head. The device measures the height of the build platform at nine different points and communicate with the computer how to adjust the surface. But the total calibration time takes just about two minutes, says Afinia.
The nozzle detection feature measures the nozzle height to ensure that it is the correct distance from the printing surface prior to printing. This process takes about 20 seconds to complete. Using the nozzle height detection feature helps models adhere securely to print surface during printing.
