A new project designed to transform your iPhone or Samsung smartphone into a virtual reality interface has been launched on Kickstarter. The Altergaze is a new, affordable virtual reality (VR) headset made on a 3D printer that lets you clip in a smartphone and experience VR straight away. It has also been designed to allow you to get access to incoming phone calls while using it.
The Altergaze creates a 3D experience with the widest possible field of view. With two lenses sitting in front of a phone's screen it creates stereoscopic 3D images with a field of view of over 110 degrees. It offers a resolution of 1136 x 640 (1920 x 1080 on Samsung S4), contrast 800:1, brightness: 500 cd /m2.
"Used as a handheld device, the Altergaze delivers one of the widest field of view ever developed for any commercial VR interface, all in a lightweight compact package.
For gaming and other complex interactive applications, the Altergaze can be strapped to your head. Optionally, you can use a 2nd device, such as your laptop or tablet, as a universal controller.
Used in combination with the iPhone 5 (Retina Display) images look sharp, bright and colourful, with only a minor screen-door-effect. The low latency head-tracking is provided by the smartphones gyroscope, with an impressive 9 degrees of freedom."
Apart from the lenses and screw, the entire body of the Altergaze is 3D printed, it allows everyone to download the schematic's and 3D print it themselves. The Altergaze's files for 3D printing will be completely open source for non commercial use. Those without a 3D printer can also customise the design and access a 3D printing facility to have it made.
The Altergaze is now raising money via crowdsourcing site Kickstarter. The funding will help the team behind the project to start the manufacturing of the Altergaze by building a 3D printing facility and set up an interactive website where you will be able to customize and preview your personalized Altergaze model.
£30 will allow you to 3D print your own Altergaze handheld and for £75 you'll get the headset model. Pledge £100 you will get the fully assembled Altergaze with a choice between the Zeus, Poseidon or Hades versions and both the handheld and headset eyepieces.
So if you like Altergaze, visit the Kickstarter website now to make a pledge and help Altergaze become a reality.
