The Steam Controller is Valve's "different kind of gamepad" to be used with the upcoming line of Steam Machines.
At the 2014 Game Developers Conference, Valve showed off a 3D-printed prototype of the new controller, see above. Valve previously announced it would update its Steam Controller by ditching the touchscreen and embracing physical buttons, but didn't share any photo of the device. At Valve's Steam Controller booth they were demonstrating their Steam Machines with their latest iteration of the Steam Controller.
The new version has better button placement - it adds two diamond-patterned button layouts in the area previously designated for a touch screen display and there is also a Steam button in the center.
Valve produced many of the prototypes through 3D printing, an ideal technique for quickly seeing how the shape of something feels in your hand. The entire casing of the controller was made using an SLA 3D printer.
