Resin based 3D printers (SLA & DLP) have been gaining in popularity as they are capable of printing higher quality items at a greater speed. Taiwan based Reify introduces today a new DLP-based stereolithography printer called Solus, aiming to bring high resolution printing to the world at an affordable price.

Made of solid, laser-cut aluminum with stainless steel components, Solus could print at very high resolutions (up to 25 microns on the xy axes). It has a large build area of 11x14.5x20 cm and features high quality components such as a stepper motor with integrated precision lead screw and professional-grade, anti-backlash nut.

Reify was founded by a Canadian, Mark Kuhnlein and is based in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Hsinchu is known as Asia's Silicon Valley due to its world-class science park which is home to over 400 high-tech companies. Reify, a team of engineers and designers, has spent nearly two years to research and develop affordable, high-resolution 3D printers.

"Our greatest effort went into creating a peeling system that allows the user to print large, highly detailed or minute objects while eliminating the need for replacing or re-coating the resin tank." Kuhnlein told us. "To achieve this, we drew on our team's expertise in the flat-panel and semiconductor industries to source a material with high strength, excellent chemical resistance and a low surface energy. We have named this patent-pending tilt peeling method TUF due to its durability."

Another unique feature of the printer is its extendable legs which allow for a wide range of resolutions and compatibility with most DLP projectors. The printer is designed to work with both XGA and HD projectors and can achieve the following resolutions and build sizes:

XGA (1024x768)

  • 50-140 microns resolution xy
  • 5.1x3.8x20cm - 14.5x11x20cm build area

HD (1920x1080)

  • 25-76 microns resolution xy
  • 4.8x2.7x20cm- 14.5x8.2x20cm build area

The team has also designed user-friendly and powerful software that allows for support generation and simple resolution/build area calibration. The software enables the user to customize the print cycle settings so it can be used with almost any photoresin. According to Kuhnlein, the printer has been well-tested with Makerjuice, Spot-A and Reify's own resins.

Solus will be crowd funding on Indiegogo soon, and the price will be around 1000 USD to early Indiegogo backers. Therefore a complete printer with XGA projector will be about 1300 USD or 1650 USD for an HD version. The projectors do not need to be modified so they can still be used to watch movies or give presentations when not printing. The printer has a small footprint of only 24x28.5cm and is 40 cm tall with its legs retracted, and it weighs under 6kg.

"Dlp-based stereolithography printers are especially useful for the jewelry, dental, toy and engineering/manufacturing industries but it is our greatest wish that this printer can be used as an affordable tool to help with medical research." Kuhnlein said. "We have already been fortunate enough to print stem cell and bone tissue scaffolds for research at a leading medical university and we believe this technology will be able to improve many peoples' lives."

By the way, I was talking about the comment Johnny posted about some chinese printer he was peddling in the comments. That comment is mysteriously gone now.

Hey Johnny! What the hell is that Chinese crap? You guys should copy some nice web design from someone.

Hardly a "large build area" - tiny is more apt: 4.3" x 5.7".

This looks pretty damn impressive. Although I'm assuming that the $1000 will only cover everything but the projecting which would probably run another $500-$1000.
