A team of ambitious engineers, entrepreneurs, artists started MOCCI, a LA based studio aiming to bring luxurious high-tech jewelry to everyone. "We believe that the future of jewelry is in customization and our mission is to bring this to you with 3D printing and an easy to use interface." the team explains.
Jeffrey Ito, MOCCI CEO/Founder
They spent the past nine months learning about 3D printing, Arduino and the Internet of Things. Using a mix of various CAD (Computer Aided Design) software - Blender, Max, ZBrush and AutoCAD they have created 6 distinct pieces for their first collection. And each piece is configured for weight, shape and function.
The team consists of many USC, FIDM and SMC students and graduates. Their jewelry prototypes were made using MakerBots at a University's Fabrication Lab, 3DHubs, shapeways and "just about any 3D printer we could get our hands on." explains the team. "Learning about various 3D Printers was an essential part of the process. And it was fun."
To build the final products, they first 3D printed a mold in wax material. The mold is then cast through the lost wax casting method. MOCCI partnered with local company Jewelry District that specializes in 3D printing for the jewelry casting process.
Each piece of jewelry is made from 22k Gold Plated Brass and the minimum supported wall thickness of this material is 0.8 mm. The material then goes through extensive hand polishing to give it a smooth, bright finished quality.
The MOCCI collection is planned for launch on October 6 on kickstarter. The funds will be used for purchasing 3D wax printers to develop MOCCI Collection II, and a signature customizable jewelry application (web based and iOS). Some examples are roman numeral ring, signature pendant, dog tag, etc. MOCCI plans also to innovate in the field of luxury wearable technology, for example to add simple chips for tasks such as stat keeping, communication, bio-monitoring, GPS, etc in the design.
The MOCCI is offering the following prices for early birds:
Mobius bracelet: $129
Money clip: $149
Brick Pendant: $179
Year of the horse medallion: $209
Pyramid pendant: $229
Ruby ring: $349
The entire collection with all 6 pieces in a handcrafted limited edition box is priced at $999.

So they 3D print some items in wax and then cast them. This is pretty much what every high end jewelry maker does these days, except they create a mold out of the wax print for mass production.
