Marin Davide from Lumi Industries, the creators of LumiPocket, the compact DLP 3d printer has just published a new instructable showing how to 3D print a working speaker with a 3D printer.
What sets this 3D printable speaker apart from others is that you will be able to print all the parts of it, including the membrane itself.
To make the speaker at home, you need a good resin-based 3d printer (FDM 3D printer is not recommended), some enameled copper wire and a magnet. Davide used enameled wire scavenged from an old stepper motor, and a S-20-05-N neodimium magnet (20mm dia x 5mm height) as well as two m3 screws and nuts for his speaker.
The 3D printable parts are free to download here on Thingiverse. These parts were 3D printed on a LumiPocket 3D Printer at 100 microns. The membrane itself is just 0.1mm thin so you need to be very careful when removing the top part of the speaker from the printing base. Then wash the part in alcohol and leave it next to an UV lamp or under the sun for 5-10 minutes.
The next step is to make the coil using the enameled copper wire. The coil can be simply glued to the speaker with a drop of resin. Then you can put the magnet inside the base, with some glue, or resin, and use the M3 screws to assemble the two printed parts. Finally, scratch off the enamel on the two ends of the copper wire, and solder them to a standard 3.5mm jack.
This is it! According to Davide, the 3D printed speaker should work with any audio source, from mobile phones to a PC, with amplifiers. This project is thus fun and relatively easy to do. If you have a resin-based 3D printer, simply follow the tutorial here to make your very own speaker.
