While an FDM 3D printer is a wonderful toy to play around with, the affordable ABS or PLA filaments don't always meet your need. Fortunately, we've just learned of eSUN's new PETG 3D printing filament that is not only affordable at $35 per kilo, but is also highly durable, flexible and even transparent. While it might be a bit too late to print Christmas ornaments with it, it's looking like a great filament for all those projects in the new year.

PETG is short for poly (ethylen Terephthalateco-1, 4-cylclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate), and is a transparent type of coplyester. It claims to be a material strong like ABS and easy to print like PLA.Chemically different from a number of other printing filaments, it can be printed at a low temperature without pre-drying, and should hardly stick to your print bed.

The new PETG filament has been developed by Chinese 3D printing filament supplier eSUN, who told 3ders.org that their latest filament is superior to ABS and PLA in a number of ways. Despite its high level of toughness and impact strength, it remains very flexible and recyclable, despite its transparency. It's also odorless during printing and features a low shrink rate, while not suffering from warping as ABS often does. Aside from the natural transparent version, it also comes in Magenta, Yellow and Blue.

Its full printing specifications are:

  • Print temperature:230~250°c
  • Plate temperature:80~90°c or without heated
  • Printing speed:30~60mm/s
  • Moving speed:30~60mm/s

Its price and properties together make this a very interesting filament. I can already think of a whole host of projects to use transparent filament for. Won't it be cool if your electronics were visible through your 3D printed casing?

The PETG filament is available through eSUN's web store. It can be shipped to just about anywhere in the world, so check it out!

I`m after doing 2 prints with it and it`s my favorite material now it sticks perfekt to kepton at 80deg prints easy without bigger problems on sharp corners and the layer adheesion strenght of the material is much higher than of PLA or ABS as i smashed my test prints it became clear that it forms a single piece of plastic rather than joined layers( I had put a flat scredriver in between the layers and the crack went diagonaly acros the print layer)the only downside i found i oozing but thats easy to deal with P.S. I got this filament at reprapworld.com
