3D printed custom insole company SOLS and WebPT, the leading web-based electronic medical record (EMR) solution for rehab therapists announced today a partnership to bring 3D printed foot orthotics to WebPT's member base of more than 43,000 rehab therapy professionals.

Through WebPT's e-commerce platform — the WebPT Marketplace — WebPT members can access SOLS' technology at a discounted offer, enabling them to create custom orthotics based on patients' electronic foot scans.

Founded in July 2013, SOLS develops 3D printed custom, corrective insoles which are one of the world's first mass applications of 3D printing. To date, the company has raised $8.15 million in funding from investors including Lux Capital and Founders Fund.

With more than 40,000 members and 7,000 clinics, WebPT is the only EMR system that includes an ecommerce platform within its application. WebPT members who use the Marketplace are able to receive group discounts — on average, 25 percent off wholesale prices — on a selection of physical therapy products.

Physical therapists in the SOLS network receive an iPad with a builtin app that gives them the power to effortlessly capture thousands of data points with six images. This allows physical therapists to order SOLS orthotics that are totally customized to each patient's foot morphology and lifestyle.

Each patient's weight, activity level, and medical needs determine the material structure of each SOLS. The SOLS company then uses next-generation computer vision and 3D printing technology to create customized products to fit to patient's body.

Before ordering, patients and practitioners can review and update the model they have created and make prescription and feature changes in real-time. SOLS then creates 3D prints of the orthotics using NASAgrade nylon and ships them directly to the provider's office within seven days. Engineered to correct body alignment, SOLS orthotics can fit into several different types of shoes, ranging from dress shoes to sneakers.

Heidi Jannenga, WebPT Cofounder and COO

"SOLS is revolutionizing the foot orthotics industry, and WebPT prides itself in developing technology that has the potential to disrupt the status quo in health care," said Heidi Jannenga, WebPT Cofounder and COO. "That's why I'm excited to help introduce this innovative company to the physical therapy industry. I'm also personally proud to work with another trailblazing woman executive."

Kegan Schouwenburg, SOLS Founder and CEO

Kegan Schouwenburg, SOLS Founder and CEO, shares Jannenga's sentiment, saying, "WebPT and SOLS are paving the way and giving rehab professionals nationwide the exciting opportunity to integrate orthotics into their core practices. We believe this partnership allows rehab professionals to expand their treatment capabilities to a more holistic approach. This is an important step towards enabling people everywhere to gain access to quality custom orthotics that allow them to live a pain-free life."
