Everyone who is even slightly connected to the web cannot avoid the torrential outpour of photos that people make nowadays. After all, everything is a camera nowadays and everyone is constantly connected to the internet. But why should us humans be the only ones able to take photos? After all, we only look at the same old boring stuff every day, like our own heads. That’s exactly why high-end camera manufacturers Nikon has decided to put cameras in the hands of dogs using 3D printing technology.

Grizzler the Dog

This interesting experiment is Heartography, which carries the secret to its project in its name. After all, how on earth can a dog handle a camera? Key is a 3D printed custom case that enables the Nikon camera to be strapped to the dog’s chest. The case itself also contains a heart-rate monitor that tracks the furry creature’s heartbeat. When it spikes – assuming that reflects happiness – the camera snaps a photo. It enables the dog, the people from Nikon say, to become a pho-dog-rapher.

Just some of the things Grizzler likes.

And as you can see in the clip below, the results are actually quite interesting. Certainly not the things we usually snap photos of. If there is a problem, it must be that dogs tend to get very excited by a lot of things, so a single walk is doubtlessly enough for lots and lots of photos. And how can we know a dog is truly happy to see these things? After all, lots of things cause your heart rate to jump. Dog Grizzler, who stars in the clip below, doesn’t exactly show a pattern in the things he likes.

At its heart, this 3D printing project is clearly all about what happens when you combine biological signals and photography. And dogs, being very active and cheerful creatures, are perfect to test it on. While it would definitely be interesting to see similar devices for humans (though the Instagram collections would surely be mind-numbing to go through), Nikon currently hasn’t stated if they intend to take this to the market. We’ll just have to continue snapping photos of our dogs ourselves for now.
