Since releasing the  excellent Form 1+ SLA 3D Printer in 2014, Formlabs has been very successful in the 3D printing community. After all, it is one of the few high quality 3D printers somewhat affordable for dedicated home users. The only downside to this machine has been that the resin SLA productions aren’t very durable, but even that is now about to change. Formlabs has just announced a brand new 3D printing material, which makes objects as detailed as you expect from a Form 1+, but are definitely strong enough for prototyping and even production.

In their press release, they even called Tough Resin the most durable material in desktop 3D printing, and to showcase and celebrate it, they have used Tough Resin to build a very fun looking Rube Goldberg machine. To clarify, a Rube Goldberg machine is a machine that relies on a large number of unnecessary mechanical steps involving marbles, weights, pulleys and sometimes even candles and pieces of string to accomplish something seemingly useless. This cool machine is visible in the clip below, and perfectly showcases that Tough Resin creation can definitely withstand lots of pressure, strain and friction.

The physical properties of Tough Resin are somewhat comparable to ABS plastic, with high levels of yield strength, elongation, and impact resistance, but as the results are far more detailed. ‘Now, parts produced with Formlabs’ Tough Resin will be able to absorb high-impact and other mechanical stressors that would normally cause 3D printed parts to snap or shatter. From load-bearing gears to snap-fit enclosures, Tough Resin material has been engineered for applications that require performance under stress or strain,’ Formlabs enthusiastically states in its press release.

Just some examples of what tough stuff can be done with this new resin.

Formlabs’ co-founder Max Lobovsky shared this optimism. ‘Engineering and prototyping are a really important application of 3D printing. We’re excited to release our new Tough Resin because now Form 1+ users can create high resolution prints in a really durable, resilient material,’ he said. ‘Developing new high-quality materials continues to be a really important focus for us. Every time we release a new material, we create new possibilities for every Form 1+ user and build a more compelling experience.’

If you own a Form 1 or Form 1+ 3D printer and would like to take your creations to the next level in terms of durability, Tough Resin has just been made available in the Formlabs webstore. The price is 175 EUR / L.
