If there’s one industry that few may not have seen coming a decade ago, smartphone photography would likely be somewhere at the top of that list.
Between both the surge of smartphone adoption and the use of photography-based social sharing apps including Instagram, it’s no surprise that smartphone photography has turned into one of the hottest businesses in recent memory.
But despite its popularity, smartphone designers are still constrained to designing cameras within the small body of a smartphone - which ultimately leaves out the ability to create more robust photography systems. Unsurprisingly, this has led to many third-party manufacturers developing their own clip-on lens systems that give users even more control of shot composure and effects without compromising quality.
Among others who have found success with creating clip-on lens systems for the iPhone include olloclip - and the company has just launched their most advanced mobile photography system to date in the form of olloclip Studio on Kickstarter.
The olloclip Studio system is a combination of the company’s all-new protective case design that also incorporates an integrated mounting solution for mobile photography accessories. Among other accessories that the company is releasing with the initial product launch includes a two-finger universal grip, a kickstand, a set of mounts for mounting your iPhone to a tripod and finally, a set of cold-shoe adapters for lightweight accessories such as microphones and lights.
Previously, the company found success with another Kickstarter project that brought a 3-in-1 lens solution to the iPhone 4 and eventually evolved into a more robust pocket lens system that today includes fisheye, wide-angle, 10x macro and 15x macro lenses that attach easily to an iPhone.
Of course - just like so many other hardware projects that have launched on Kickstarter - the company has turned to 3D printing to develop and refine their Studio system before sending the final designs off for traditional manufacturing.
“When we set out to design our first accessory, we started with a review of all the various 'grips' already on the market,” says the company on their Kickstarter page.
“While there are a lot 'rig' based solutions out there, we didn't want to create another DIY project where the user spends more time figuring out how to configure the mounting system vs. focusing on the opportunity before them. So we went back to the basics and looked at the variety of ways people hold their phones. From this research, we created the simplest and most intuitive way to grip your phone; enabling you to be more immersed in the creative process than ever before.”
The company will be shipping the new grip case with their Accessory Kit with the goal of adding even more functionality to the case over time.
With over $71,000 raised with a goal of $100,000, the company is well on their way towards a successful funding with over three weeks left to go in their campaign. For those interested in purchasing the Studio, pledging $35 gets you a case for the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus with a kickstand clip and for $25 more, a $60 pledge will get you the case and the full accessory package with two cold shoes and the two tripod mounts as well as the finger grip.
