As any gamer will tell you, Bungie’s Destiny video game has been a huge hit in the gaming world, so much so that even we here in the 3D printing community feel its effects. A large number of props from the game have already been 3D printed and shared online, and especially guns have been remarkably popular. Over the past few months, we’ve already seen this awesome 3D printed replica of the Bad Juju rifle and this Thorn airsoft pistol. Now the South African Redditor Kirby Downey, designer of the Thorn pistol, is back for more and has built a fantastic replica of the Sleeper Simulant rifle from the latest Destiny expansion: The Taken King.
For the uninitiated, Destiny is a huge MMO shooter from the makers of Halo. It has been quite a hit since its release in September of last year, largely because it has somehow successfully managed to take Halo's praised competitive combats into the MMO realm. And every expansion, including the recently released The Taken King, has continued that success and with additional weapons. With a very large arsenal available, it is perhaps hardly surprising that prop designer and airsoft enthusiast Kirby Downey was drawn to this project. Kirby is a London-based product designer from South Africa who just loves 3D printed creations that do something. 'I specialize in taking objects and adding a technical and mechanical side to it, first making it work mechanically before adding a story to the product using shapes and forms,' he says.
Having already impressed us and the rest of the world with his Thorn airsoft rifle, it was only logical that he had to move on to the Sleeper Simulant. This is Destiny’s most elusive and coveted weapon, and was only available for a very short period of time as part of ‘The First Firewall’ quest. Fans have been going wild about how to obtain it, as it seemed to be completely impossible for a long time, so it is clear to see why Kirby chose to recreate this massive gun with his 3D printer. Incidentally, in game, the weapon is unlike all the others in that it shoots laser beams that bounce off the environment.
As the Redditor Kirby (who frequents Reddit as D3DP and Imgur as KirbyDowner) explained, this was weapon was far more challenging to build than the previous one. ‘This is probably one of the hardest model I have created,’ he wrote on Reddit. 'I've been working on it for a while and was hoping to finish it before it was available in game but here it is nonetheless!’ The actual gun was designed in SolidWorks and was completely 3D printed on a regular desktop 3D printer.
The result is a fantastic weapon that looks every bit as cool as the in-game Sleeper Stimulant. If you fancy a bit of 3D printing challenge, you can find all the necessary files on MyMiniFactory here. Now if only Kirby Downey would turn this cool Destiny weapon into an airsoft rifle too…
