In recent years, 3D printing technologies have opened the doors for some novel and innovative landscape model projects, including Printscape3D’s 3D printed model of UK landscapes, and Microscape’s 3D printed souvenir scale models of Manhattan neighborhoods. As the field continues to grow and 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies develop at a quick rate, it is no wonder that more and more innovative 3D printed landscape companies are starting to pop up. In Germany, for instance, terrain map construction company shapeWerk has also begun to use professional 3D printing processes to create amazingly detailed 3D printed terrain maps.

The Leipzig based company, which was founded by Stefan Geisenheiner, specializes in terrain mapping and the construction of accurate, scaled down terrain map models. Using elevation data from regions all over the world, or 3D scanning data captured by aerial drones, shapeWerk can generate 3D printable models to be used for a range of functions.

The company’s terrain map feature, which can be tested for free on its website, lets you essentially zoom in on any part of a world map and select a quadrant you could like to have modeled. From Mount Everest, to New Zealand’s Mount Cook, to the Grand Canyon, you can choose from an almost limitless number of terrain locations, which are modeled based on the best elevation data publicly available. Once the 3D model is generated and your estimate is determined, you can choose to order your model with a number of different surface finishes and textures. You can even choose to add GPS tracks, cadastrial information or scaled 3D printed models of buildings, wind mills, etc.

Using an industrial grade 3D printer, the models are then additively manufactured layer by layer, with the option of color injections. If ordered, the terrain model can be 3D printed in two formats: the Compact Size which measures 10 x 14 inches, or a Grand Relief format which can measure up to 6 feet square. The latter is made up of different quadrants and is mounted on a custom sized base. The Compact Size model retails for approximately $150, while the cost for the Grand Relief varies depending on size.

shapeWerk also offers a drone aerial survey, which can be used to capture data for 3D printable models as well as to determine volume estimation, panoramic imagery, and construction documentation. As the company’s website states, “Using photogrammetry [or aerial imagery], which is captured by camera equipment in UAS, shapeWerk captures 3D data of buildings, vegetation, monuments, dykes and excavations. From the captured 3D model surfaces and volumes of complex shapes can be estimated quickly.”

shapeWerk’s 3D printed terrain models can ship anywhere in the world, and can even be smartly showcased with custom designed base mounts and acrylic glass hoods. The base mounts, as mentioned, can be customized with a professional legend text, labels, and even your corporate logo. The bases can also be configured to fit LED lights into 3D printed rails to make for an especially dynamic display.

shapeWerk’s models can be made and used for a variety of purposes, from tourism or sports marketing, to architectural or presentation models, to simply showcasing the earth’s mountains or reliefs. Additionally, the company also offers a more basic model making service through which they can verify your own model and 3D print it using their professional grade 3D printer.
