As cat owners across the world know, communicating with your pet can be a bit difficult. You know he or she wants something when meowing, but what exactly? Does she like the expensive treats you bought her? Fortunately, the solution is here. The team over at Temptations Lab have joined forces with London-based ad agency adam&eveDDB to develop the Catterbox: a 3D printed cat collar that analyzes your cat’s noises and plays a pre-recorded human voice in response, so you know exactly what your pet is saying. After centuries, we can finally feel a cat’s appreciation.
As the guys over at Temptations Lab explain, their startup was actually set up precisely to develop cat-oriented tech solutions. “We set up The Temptations Lab in 2015 in order to inject some serious fun into cats’ lives,” they explain. “For our first project we’ve set out to use the very latest technology to get to know them better. We believe that if people understood cats better they’d see just how awesome they really are.”
While it all sounds a bit unbelievable, there is actually a scientific basis for this approach. Various studies have shown that adult cats don’t meow to each other; they only do so to humans. In other words, our cats are already trying to communicate with us. The developers from the Temptation Lab are simply tried to systematically analyze those attempts to make them more understandable. To do so, they extensively studied cat behavior and the noises they make in response to food, petting and cleaning, and wrote a program that detects a cat’s meow and matches it with a certain response.
Once the cat’s intensions become clear, they simply play a pre-made recording of a human voice saying “Hello” or “Oh this is great”. The speaker itself is packed into a custom-made 3D printed collar, along with all the other hardware. Thanks to (presumably a Bluetooth connected) app, you can simply choose a fitting voice for your cat. Personally, I always pictured my cat with an Australian accent, so this is a fantastic solution. The collar is available in four colors.
If you think the time has come to make your cats full family members, then here’s some good news: the Catterbox collars are now available in New Zealand and the United States, with more releases presumably following.
