3D printer manufacturer XYZprinting announced today the company's first education-focused 3D printer, the da Vinci miniMaker, a beginner-friendly 3D printer designed for STEAM education.

Retailing for $229, the da Vinci miniMaker features auto-calibration, smaller, lightweight design and 5.9" x 5.9" x 5.9" (150 x 150 x 150mm) build size. The da Vinci miniMaker only prints with XYZprinting's bio-degradable, non-toxic PLA filament. According to the company, this filament has gone through various tests to ensure that it is DEHP-free and heavy metal-free for user safety.

Users of the new da Vinci miniMaker will have access to XYZprinting's "Educational Ecosystem," which includes XYZmaker 3D modeling application, XYZprinting STEAM, a free 3D printing curriculum exchange platform for all K-12 grades, and the XYZ 3D Gallery for 3D models.

"We're excited to continue to provide accessible solutions that advance and integrate 3D printing technology into the educational system across grades K-12 and beyond," said Simon Shen, CEO of XYZprinting and New Kinpo Group. "The da Vinci miniMaker will help encourage, expand, and shape the cognitive skills and abilities of the next generation of engineers, designers, and creators."

Retailing for $229, the da Vinci miniMaker is now available for pre-order in the U.S. on Amazon.com with product expected to ship Fall 2016.

Sorry, I don't know safety rules regarding school outside Italy..... but in my country this printer CAN'T be used in a school. It is totally open, the bed is moving and kids can touch it, when also printing PLA (plus or minus 200°C) the noozle can be touched by hands. it's extremly dangerous situation for (expecially primary) schools. It can be colored , simple or economic but should not be dangerous for children (especially if under 10/12 years).
