Someone should tell Dorothy to pack up her ruby slippers because there’s a new ruby extruder in town. European 3D printer distribution company 3DVerkstan has just launched the new Olsson Ruby 3D printer nozzle, capable of printing new abrasive materials. The new 3D printer part, which was unveiled today is available for purchase in the United States and across Europe at certain resellers.

Manufactured in Sweden, the Olsson Ruby nozzle is equipped with an extra-strong ruby tip, which—just short of diamond strength—allows for hard and abrasive materials to be extruded through it. Such materials include Carbon fibre, steel, and wood composites, as well as Boron Carbide, Tungsten, and Phosphorescent pigment. Of course, the nozzle works well with more standard materials as well, such as PLA, ABS, CPE/PET, and nylon.

As 3DVerkstan state in a press release about the new nozzle tip, the Olsson Ruby was initially developed to print with a Boron Carbide (B4C) composite material, one of the hardest materials known. Aside from the ruby tip, the rest of the nozzle is made from brass, a material with excellent heat conductivity properties, and performance.

After undergoing extensive testing both in Sweden and by makers all across the globe, 3DVerkstan is finally ready to release their innovative 3D printer product in the hopes that it will enable makers to 3D print in a wider range of materials without compromising speed, quality, or ease of use. Judging by the nozzle’s website, makers and companies that have tested it are more than satisfied with their print results.

Anders Olsson

“After close to a year of testing, we are happy presenting this exciting upgrade for desktop 3D printing,” commented Daniel Ljungstif, CEO of 3DVerkstan. “The Olsson Ruby is a high-tech nozzle with a carefully designed ruby tip, with unique properties…Already now, companies such as electronics manufacturer Norautron are using The Olsson Ruby together with carbon-filled materials (Colorfabb XT-CF20) to print ESD-safe (dissipative) tooling and fixtures for manufacturing.”

The Olsson Ruby was designed for 3DVerkstan by Anders Olsson, whom some might recognize for having invented the Olsson Block for Ultimaker 2+ 3D printers. The new 3D printer nozzle was first created so that researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden could 3D print hard materials with more ease.

If you’re interested in trying out your own Olsson Ruby nozzle, 3DVerkstan is now selling the 3D printer part through its network of global partners for the reasonable cost of $90 or €80 (excluding VAT/taxes). The ruby tipped nozzle is compatible with a wide range of desktop FDM 3D printers, including Ultimakers, the Lulzbot TAZ, and any 3D printers with an E3D V4 3.0mm hotend, E3D V5 3mm hotend, or E3D V6 3mm hotend.
