Listen up Aussie makers: we highly suggest you get to your local ALDI supermarket this weekend, as the international grocery chain will be selling the Cocoon Create desktop 3D printer for the low cost of $499 AUD. The printer will go on sale at Australian ALDIs on May 13, 2017.

While most people rely on their local grocery stores to get snacks and produce, Australians have had a couple opportunities to add “3D printer” to their shopping list, as supermarket chain ALDI has seemingly become a fairly regular supplier of Cocoon Create 3D printers.

Last year, ALDI Australia announced it had struck a deal with 3D printer startup Cocoon Create (a part of Australian electronics company Winplus) to begin selling its various 3D printing products, including a desktop FDM 3D printer, a 3D pen, and PLA 3D printing filaments. Unsurprisingly, the news gained lots of traction and brought droves of people to the store to snatch up the affordable 3D printing goods.

On Saturday, ALDI will once again be stocking the $499 Cocoon Create desktop 3D printer as part of its “Special Buys” and will be offering it until stock runs out. If you’ve been thinking of investing in a desktop 3D printer for the home or office (and are in Australia) but have been a bit short on cash, the sale could be the perfect opportunity to dip your toes into 3D printing.

Heralded for its low cost, the Cocoon Create 3D printer has received generally positive reviews regarding its user-friendliness and print quality. In terms of specs, the 3D printer has a generous build volume of 200 x 200 x 180 mm, a layer resolution of 100 to 400 microns, a max printing speed of 70 mm/s, and a heated print bed.

The Cocoon Create is compatible with PLA, ABS, PVA, and HIPS materials, and is capable of 3D printing models directly from an SD card. Users can control their prints via an intuitive touchscreen system. The 3D printer also comes with a one-year warranty.

In addition to the budget 3D printer, Cocoon Create’s PLA filament spools will also be on sale at ALDI for $35 AUD per 1 kg spool. It’s not clear whether the 3D printer and materials will be sold at all Australian ALDI locations, but interested makers can find out more here.
