Körber, an international technology group, has invested in Berlin-based 3D printer company BigRep as part of a Series B financing round. BigRep specializes in large-format 3D printers like the BigRep ONE.

You can see why BigRep, a popular Berlin-based 3D printing startup, would be an attractive proposition for investors.

The company’s giant BigRep ONE FDM 3D printer (1,005 x 1,005 x 1,005 mm build volume) is one of the biggest 3D printers in the world, and can 3D print complete items of furniture as well as other products.

That machine, in addition to other models like the BigRep Studio, has brought the company worldwide attention, making BigRep one of the premier names in big additive manufacturing.

BigRep’s large-format 3D printing capabilities, burgeoning reputation, and growing footprint (BigRep now has offices in New York and Singapore) recently proved sufficient to convince international technology group Körber to invest in the German additive startup. The deal was struck during a Series B financing round.

The partnership between the two companies was officially announced on August 4, and will enable BigRep to expand its operations around the world.

“Through this additional investment in our company, we are able to further expand the development and solutions as well as increase our global footprint and sales,” said René Gurka, CEO of BigRep. “Körber is a very experienced technology company that can support us not only financially, but also in industrial machine building.”

Körber has around 11,500 employees worldwide, and consists of more than 130 production, service, and sales companies. The Körber Group generated sales of EUR 2.2 billion in the 2016 financial year. But despite its size, the Group has been keeping a close eye on the small but rapidly growing BigRep.

“Since its founding 2014, BigRep has developed into a competitive, steadily growing company with more than 70 employees and offices in the US and Asia,” commented Michael Horn, member of Körber AG’s Board of Management.

And Körber seems to have serious plans for BigRep, identifying its potential not only as an investment, but as a tool to improve other aspects of Körber.

“In addition to our existing know-how, we want to explore the possibilities of additive manufacturing even more intensively through our joint venture with the IRPD through our participation in BigRep,” Horn said. “In addition, we will use these competencies within our business areas for further customer applications development.”

In addition to its 3D printing systems, BigRep also produces a range of 3D printing materials. The company also offers services such as technical consulting and additive manufacturing training.
