Star Trek Online, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), now lets gamers 3D print their starships. The cool 3D printing feature comes thanks to a partnership between software company Perfect World, developer Cryptic Studios, and cloud 3D printing company Mixed Dimensions.
March will be a good month for starship captains in the Star Trek Online universe. Partnering with cloud 3D printing company Mixed Dimensions, Star Trek Online will, come March, allow gamers to 3D print their own personal starships from the game as 12-inch resin models. Nearly all the 500 playable starships will be made 3D printable, while personal customizations like ship names, colors, and shield skins can all be incorporated into the print.
The new in-game feature will direct gamers to Mixed Dimension’s GamePrint web site, which will provide several different purchase options. On the cheaper end, gamers can opt for a single-color or pre-primed model, but those who want their ship rendered in the most glorious detail can choose a luxury hand-painted option, expertly finished by one of GamePrint’s resident artists.
For those who prefers the classics, GamePrint will also offer finished 3D printed models replicating 20 of Star Trek Online’s exclusive and most popular starships.
The news will be especially welcome to Star Trek Online players who had previously been teased with a similar feature, only to see it fail. The game’s creators had previously partnered with 3D printing company Eucl3D to offer 3D printed starships, but that company shuttered in 2016.
Let’s hope the Mixed Dimensions deal goes more smoothly!
“We are absolutely elated to expand Star Trek Online to the physical universe,” said Stephen Ricossa, Executive Producer for Star Trek Online. “Our new partnership with Mixed Dimensions will allow our community to immortalize their favorite starships. We can’t wait to see the reaction from our captains when the first wave of ships begins to roll out.”
“The Mixed Dimensions GamePrint technology will introduce a powerful integral reality experience to Star Trek Online players for the first time,” said Muhannad Taslaq, CEO of Mixed Dimensions. “We are thrilled to be teaming with the amazing creative teams at Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios to deliver highly detailed, fully customized ship models to Star Trek fans.”
Back in 2016, Mixed Dimensions raised $4.3 million for GamePrint, MakePrintable, and other projects.
