Maker [Mag-net] has designed a detailed 3D printed replica of the castle from Howl’s Moving Castle, the 2004 Studio Ghibli movie. Luckily for those who want to get “spirited away” by their 3D printer, [Mag-net] has made the design available to download for free.
Based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones, the 2004 movie Howl’s Moving Castle is, alongside other classics like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, one of the most beloved in the Studio Ghibli canon. The movie tells the story of Sophie, a hatter who gets turned into an old lady, and Howl, a mysterious shapeshifting wizard whose castle walks on legs.
The animated castle is astounding in its complexity, and maker [Mag-net] has now paid tribute to that sublime artistry with a detailed 3D printable model of the castle. It’s made up of 14 printable parts, the largest of which measures 194 mm, and is free to download.
Designed in Pixologic’s ZBrush, the 3D printed Howl’s Moving Castle model measures 250 mm in height when fully assembled, and weighs 490 g. The designer says printing at 0.15 mm layer height took around 44 hours.
To complete the Howl’s Moving Castle collection, [Mag-net] has also made a 3D printable Calcifer and Turnip Head. Get the castle here.
