About a month ago, we heard that free-to-play MMORPG Star Trek Online would be letting gamers 3D print their starships courtesy of a collaboration with 3D printing company Mixed Dimensions. Prices have now been revealed for those 3D printed models, and they’re pretty steep.
Free-to-play games are great. Whether it’s a simple little time-waster on your smartphone or a multiplayer internet phenomenon, it’s always nice to take part in some gratis gaming.
Many Star Trek fans have been enjoying the free version of MMORPG Star Trek Online since its introduction in 2012, with only the more committed gamers opting in for a subscription package that includes extra benefits.
It’s therefore no surprise that the game’s publisher, Perfect World Entertainment, and its developer, Cryptic Studios, are trying to cash in on gamers’ love of the game by offering customized 3D printed starship models. We think this is a pretty cool way of making money off a game: give players something tangible they can keep, and get them further committed to the game as they do so.
We reported on that big announcement last month, but those behind Star Trek Online have now revealed the price that gamers must pay to get a 3D printed model of their starship.
Without further ado, here they are:
Collectible Version
Base Price: $350
“Captains can commission one of the company’s master artists to hand-paint a premium, full-colored resin model of their starship, which includes detailed shading. Exceptional artistry and focus is placed on each individual ship.”
Single Color Version
Base Price: $225
“Players can order a 3D printed model of their starship, painted in either gold, silver, bronze or black. The model is polished, finished and ready for display.”
Primer Version
Base price: $200
“Model painters and hobbyists can order a primed model of their favorite starship, coated in a base layer of primer and ready to be painted.”
These prices will vary depending on the size and level of customization of each ship, but all starships will be delivered in customized packaging and include an exclusive Star Trek Online-branded display stand.

Those wanting one of these cool 3D printed models will need to act fast. Since the Star Trek models are handcrafted and painted, they will be made in batches of 100 units at a time. So when gamers place an order with 3D printing service Mixed Dimensions, they will be notified of the estimated time it will take to create and deliver their starship.
Shipping is available in most of North America, the European Union, Australia, Brazil and several other territories.
Is it worth it? That’s ultimately for gamers to decide, of course, though any Star Trek Online fans with digital sculpting skills will surely fancy their chances with an unofficial, DIY 3D printed model.
