It seems even the stars are seeing the benefits of 3D printing these days. Actors Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia from popular NBC show This is Us used 3D printing to replicate their SAG Awards for Best TV Ensemble to give to the rest of the show’s cast.

According to the stars, 13 members of the show’s cast were presented with their own SAG awards on January 21st, which left some of This is Us’ younger actors, including Hannah Zeile, Logan Shroyer, and Niles Fitch, with nothing to show for the achievement.

Fortunately, Ventimiglia (who also starred in the long-running series Gilmore Girls) and Moore were not about to let their fellow cast members and on-screen children be forgotten.

As the pair revealed at SXSW in Austin this week, they brought their own SAG awards to a 3D printing shop, where they were presumably 3D scanned and replicated using 3D printing technologies.

“It wasn't the real statue but also, from mom and dad, wanted them to know 'hey, we love you guys and you should have a representation siting on your mantel,'" said Ventimiglia during the This is Us panel at SXSW.

In addition to 3D printing SAG award replicas, many of This Is Us’ cast members brought their younger co-stars to the award show ceremony as plus ones.

Funnily, this is not the first time that 3D printing has been used to create awards for the entertainment industry. In fact, the 2016 and 2017 Academy Awards used 3D printing in the design and creation of the iconic Oscar statuettes.

Though viewers may not realize it, the Oscar awards have a slightly different design each year, and much care is put into designing and manufacturing them. In 2016, for instance, to celebrate the first ever Academy Awards in 1929, the Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry in New York was enlisted to recreate the original 1929 statuette using 3D scanning and printing.
